Cocktail Recipes: Rosa May

This rosy tipple is name after the suffragette Rosa May Billinghurst who was born in Lewisham in 1875. She's important to us as she campaigned fearlessly for women’s suffrage even though she had contracted polio in childhood and had get around on a tricycle. She was fierce, and is alleged to have charged anybody who got in her way with her crutches!

Roses and gin are natural partners, the fragrant floral notes are given an edge by the lemon, lime and juniper in the Lewisham Gin. If you like Turkish Delight, you’ll enjoy this cocktail, but don’t expect it to be quite as sweet.

Per drink:

  • 50ml Lewisham Gin
  • 25ml extra dry vermouth
  • 5 ml rose syrup (you can buy this ready-made, or see below to make your own)
  • Garnish: rose petals and a twist of lemon peel

To make a Rosa May:

  1. Chill a martini glass.
  2. Pour the Lewisham Gin, vermouth and rose syrup into a cocktail shaker and fill it with ice.
  3. Shake vigorously, then strain into your chilled glass and garnish with a rose petal and a twist of lemon peel.
