What is a London Dry Gin?

You'll have heard us referred to as the "Quintessential London Dry Gin" but, with all the different types of gin out there, what does this actually mean?

A London dry gin is defined as that which is infused with botanicals through re-distillation only. In order to be a London Dry Gin, no artificial ingredients, colours or flavours are permitted. And perhaps most importantly, no natural colours or flavours may be added after the distillation process. The predominant flavour must come from juniper, and it must be at least ABV 37.5%.

Despite the name however, it does not have to be made in London - one of the common misconceptions about London Dry Gins! Although, in the mid-2010s, there was a push to create a standard by which any gin with the name London dry gin had to be made in London, according toThe Spirits Business, but that idea was abandoned due to the massive effort it would take to make and enforce the switch.

So what does this mean for Lewisham Gin?

At ABV 40%, it packs a serious punch with multi-shot distillation, quadrupling the botanic load with each distillation basket. It is a unique and versatile gin that works as well in a classic G&T as it does in a more complex cocktail, and is also great served neat. And while its not essential, our gin is actually made in London!
